SHOP MULTI-TOOLS ONLINEMultitools were first designed and produced by Tim Leatherman of Leatherman Tools. Leatherman was established in the early ‘80s in Portland, with a design called the Pocket Survival Tool, with nine features including blades, a punch, screwdrivers, a file and pliers. The multitool has taken off around the world as an easy-to-carry toolbox. Some designs feature a simple array of basic tools chosen for their practicality; bare basics such as blades, screwdrivers, scissors, can openers and more. Many have handy extras designed specifically for camping trips and survival in emergency situations; serrated blades, wire cutters, rulers, saws, glass breakers, ring cutters and more. Multitools in NZ are incredibly popular amongst outdoor adventurers, fishers, campers, extreme sports enthusiasts and all-round well prepared individuals alike.
Multitools are made of stainless steel and most are based around a pair of pliers with a variety of pull out tools including screw drivers, knife blades, files, saws, awl, etc. Although many mimic the shape of a Swiss army knife, most have a top axis and fold apart, and some come in innovative compact shapes such as discs which can be attached to backpacks and bags with carabiners. Recent designs split tool sets between a larger and a smaller unit, so the most important tools are within easy reach, while the rest can be stored away (see for example the Leatherman Rebar and Micra).
