Machine and hand forged axes
Axes and machetes are essential for backwoodsmen and adventurers in heavily forested areas, but they’re much more versatile than you may think. In addition to felling trees and processing firewood (felling axe vs hand axe/hatchet), you can use them in survival situations similar to the way you’d use a larger knife, to start a fire, for hunting, and to reflect light. They’re indispensable for making shelters, as they conserve energy when limbing, splitting and so on. They are also the most practical blade you can take with you for snow and ice cutting, as well as breaking down barriers in emergencies. This makes them an essential addition to any pack, especially for longer journeys off the beaten track. All of our axes online are relatively versatile, but some such as campers are especially made for a variety of light uses around the camp site.
Hand forged axes are often considered superior because they’re guaranteed to be made from quality tool grade steel that really holds an edge, unlike cheap hardware store imitations. Many people also like the idea of keeping traditional manufacturing techniques alive by purchasing hand forged axes. However, for practical purposes, quality drop forged heads are just as durable and resistant to wear. Our range of axes online includes both types, so your selection is down to personal preference.
Most of our axes and machetes come with beautiful leather sheaths for safety and protection. However, we recommend picking up a whetstone from the Sharpeners section (see left) so you can maintain your blade effectively.
