The Opinel Knives, crafted high in the French Alps, are famous and virtually unchanged since 1890.
But, now Opinel is going high-tech with space-age Materials. This new N°12 Survival Knife features a manufactured from 12C27M Swedish Sandvik Blade as well as an integrated Cutting Hook, Fire Starter, 110db Survival Whistle and a Lanyard Ring.
The Fiberglass-reinforced Polyamide Handle withstands shocks, humidity, and extreme temperatures(-40°F à +176°F). The Pealess Survival Whistle functions in all weathers (110 decibels).
Opinel’s design uses its built-in Fire-starter as a pin to hold a Hook-blade at the butt of the handle in place. It slides out of the Handle a few millimetres and clicks in place when needed in the field.
Pull the pin all the way out and you have a Ferrocerium Rod capable of producing 5,000-degree sparks. I scrapped it against the back of the Blade to shoot tiny balls of fire, igniting kindling into a smouldering mass.
The Opinel N°12 Survival Knife features a Virobloc Safety Ring. Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc Safety Ring is fitted to all folding knives as of the N° 06. Cut out of Stainless Steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the Blade open (safety in use), it is now possible to lock the Blade closed (Safety in transport).
